Do All Musicians Read Music?

“The short answer is, it depends. When you look at an orchestra performing, everyone in the room is reading and performing to sheet music. This, pun intended, is critical in making sure everyone is on the ‘same page’. Can you imagine what would transpire acoustically if up to 100 musicians in a full symphonic orchestra tried playing together… by ear!? There would be note, timing, and interpretation errors all over the place. There is simply too much complexity in rhythm, melody, and harmony for it to be left to interpretation. In this example, sight reading at a high level is a prerequisite to find success as an orchestral player event at the lower levels. You will find that mostly classically trained musicians will swear fealty to the method and value of visual music learning.”
